- ItemEssays on international trade(2025-11) Bernini, Federico GastónThis dissertation explores key dimensions of Argentina’s export performance in the context of persistent economic stagnation. Motivated by the widespread view that export-oriented growth is essential for the country’s development, the thesis examines how export composition, trade policy, and financial constraints shape firms’ ability to integrate into global markets. A central theme is the identification of “desirable” exports—those most likely to foster long-term growth. The analysis revisits conventional classifications, proposing a new approach to capture differentiated exports, particularly high value-added food products. The thesis also investigates how import restrictions affect exporting firms through input constraints, highlighting the trade-offs of protectionist policies. Finally, it examines the relationship between financial deepening and export activity, focusing on the role of capital repatriation in easing credit constraints. By combining novel data and empirical strategies, this research contributes to the broader understanding of how policy and structural conditions influence export development in middle-income economies.
