dc.description.abstractThis Paper studies the effect of legal gambling on alcohol consumption in the United States. The analysis uses the fact that different states legalized gambling in different periods, while some states have not legalized gambling yet. The paper uses this particular variation across time and space as an instrument to identify the casual effect of legal gambling on alcohol consumption. After controlling for state and year fixed effects, I find the states that legalized gambling experienced a 5 percent increase in alcohol consumption.
