Title: It’s a matter of trust : corruption scandals and political discontent in pandemic times
Abstract: We study how corruption scandals lead to different forms of political discontent. We
take advantage of the fact that the largest corruption scandal during the pandemic in Peru
(the vacungate scandal) erupted during the fieldwork of a public opinion survey and use the
quasi-exogenous variation in exposure to the corruption scandal arising from differences in
interview dates across respondent. We find that the vacunagate scandal triggered a sizable
increase in the perception of corruption, reduced trust in both national and local governments,
and changed the perception of democracy as a suitable political system. These
short-run effects are significantly higher among those directly affected by this disease. We
also show that our results are robust to placebo test, changes in the bandwidth used, and
an alternative model specification.

Title: Curb your enthusiasm on sign-in bonuses : evidence from Coinbase’s Super Bowl campaign
Abstract: This thesis explores the impact of a sign-in bonus campaign on mobile app usage, using Coinbase’s
2022 Super Bowl marketing campaign as a case study. Marketing campaigns can affect
user behavior over different stages of their “customer journey”: getting to know the app, downloading
and engaging with it. Based on user activity daily data and using the synthetic control
method for rigorous impact evaluation, we find that the campaign had a significant short-term
effect on app downloads, but no effect on posterior user engagement. These results cast doubts
on the profitability of such marketing strategies.

Title: Some due relief of a heavy burden : the effect of an Argentinian childcare program on mothers' labor supply
Abstract: This study aims to identify the causal effects of an Argentinian childcare program on mothers' labor market outcomes. In 2009, the government of the City of Buenos Aires launched a program, through which it created childcare centers for vulnerable children up to 3 years. Its main purpose was to ensure the healthy growth and development of the most unprotected children in the city. Since 2009, 76 centers have been opened throughout the city, most of which are located in the southern neighborhoods, where the most vulnerable families live. In this study, I use a regression discontinuity design to estimate the causal effects of the program by exploding the discontinuity in the elegibility for the program. My results show that being potentially eligible for the program increases the mother's probability of belonging to the workforce by 9.67 percentage points and the probability of being employed by 12.9 percentage points, when the quantity of current operating childcare centers in the \textit{comuna} where the mother lives is between 2 and 7. These effects are both statistically and economically significant. This study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of childcare programs in promoting women's labor market participation and highlights the need for policies that address the issue of access to childcare services.
